Child-Friendly Activities
Here are some fun activities that the kids will love:
- The Skunk Train: this historic old train takes you for a ride through the redwood trees along the Noyo River. The open-air car lets you really experience it firsthand.
- Beaches and Tidepools: we are adjacent to Pudding Creek Beach, a huge beach by the Pudding Creek Trestle. The beach also offers a lot of tidepooling around the edges. Indeed, the entire stretch of coast opposite the Surf & Sand provides great tidepooling.
- Whalewatching: everybody gets excited watching the whale spouts, and you can even see their back and flukes when they surface to breathe. You can either watch them from shore, or you can go out on a whalewatching boat during the migration from December to April.
- Harbor Seals: one of the features in the adjacent state park is a harbor seal rookery, where the females gather in April and May to raise the young ones. MacKerricher SP has a great boardwalk that takes out to an observation platform above the rocks where the seals hang out, and you can see them quite well from this spot!
- Fishing at Lake Cleone: this lake in MacKerricher State Park is stocked by CA State Parks, and the lake is very accessible. It is also a popular spot with birdwatchers.
- Walking and Biking: the MacKerricher SP Coastal Path runs alongside our property. Since it follows the ocean, the path is flat for miles. This is a great spot for children to ride bikes or walk, since no motorized traffic is allowed.
- Miniature Golf: down at the south end of Fort Bragg, you'll find miniature golf next to the Emerald Dolphin Motel at Ocean Drive. Turn right at Ocean Drive, the first light after you cross the Noyo Bridge.
