Getting to the Surf & Sand Lodge

From San Francisco and Cloverdale (156 miles; 4 hours from Golden Gate)

Drive north from San Francisco on Highway 101 for 80 miles, and take the last Cloverdale exit (to Highway 128 Intersection). Take Highway 128 west for 56 miles to the Coast, passing by Yorkville, Boonville, and Philo on your way through the Anderson Valley wine country. At the intersection of Highway 128 and Highway 1, continue straight ahead onto Highway 1. Travel north on Highway 1 for 19 miles to Fort Bragg. Continue north on Highway One / Main Street to the north end of Fort Bragg. Surf & Sand is at 1131 North Main Street, a quarter-mile north of the last traffic light at Elm Street and the railroad trestle at Pudding Creek.

From San Francisco along the Pacific Ocean (170 miles; 6 hours)

While highly scenic, this drive takes about 6 hours to get from the Golden Gate Bridge to Fort Bragg. Head north from San Francisco on Highway 101. About 5 miles after you cross the Golden Gate Bridge, take the Highway One exit. Head west on 1 for 6 miles, and you’ll reach the coast near Muir Beach. Continue north on Highway One for 160 miles until you reach Fort Bragg. Continue north on Highway One / Main Street to the north end of Fort Bragg. Surf & Sand is at 1131 North Main Street, a quarter-mile north of the last traffic light at Elm Street and the railroad trestle at Pudding Creek.

From Willits (33 miles; 45 minutes)

Take Highway 20 west for 33 miles to Highway 1. Proceed north on Highway One / Main Street to the north end of Fort Bragg. Surf & Sand is at 1131 North Main Street, a quarter-mile north of the last traffic light at Elm Street and the railroad trestle at Pudding Creek.

From Ukiah (55 miles; 1 1/2 hours)

Go north on Highway 101 for 22 miles to Willits, then turn west onto Highway 20. Take Highway 20 west for 33 miles until you reach Highway One in Fort Bragg. At the intersection of Highway 1 and Highway 20, turn right (north) to Fort Bragg. Continue north on Highway One / Main Street to the north end of Fort Bragg. Surf & Sand is at 1131 North Main Street, a quarter-mile north of the last traffic light at Elm Street and the railroad trestle at Pudding Creek.

From Williams (130 miles; 4 hours)

Take Highway 20 west for 78 miles until you reach Highway 101, just 5 miles north of Ukiah. Head north on 101 for 15 miles to Willits. Take Highway 20 west for 33 miles until you reach Highway One in Fort Bragg. At the intersection of Highway 1 and Highway 20, turn right (north) to Fort Bragg. Proceed north on Highway One / Main Street to the north end of Fort Bragg. Surf & Sand is at 1131 North Main Street, a quarter-mile north of the last traffic light at Elm Street and the railroad trestle at Pudding Creek.

From Sacramento (190 miles; 5 hours)

Go north on I-5 for 60 miles to Williams, then turn west onto Highway 20. Take Highway 20 west for 78 miles until you reach Highway 101, just 5 miles north of Ukiah. Head north on 101 for 15 miles to Willits. Take Highway 20 west for 33 miles until you reach Highway One in Fort Bragg. At the intersection of Highway 1 and Highway 20, turn right (north) to Fort Bragg. Proceed north on Highway One / Main Street to the north end of Fort Bragg. Surf & Sand is at 1131 North Main Street, a quarter-mile north of the last traffic light at Elm Street and the railroad trestle at Pudding Creek.

Arriving from the East

• Chico (60 miles to Williams): head west to I-5, then go south to Highway 20 at Williams. (Follow above directions from Williams.)
• Yuba City / Marysville: take Highway 20 west for 35 miles to Williams (see above). (Follow above directions from Williams.)
• Grass Valley: follow Highway 20 west for 67 miles to Williams (see above). (Follow above directions from Williams.)
• Paradise (70 miles to Williams): head west to Williams (see above). (Follow above directions from Williams.)

Arriving from the North

From Highway 101, take Highway 1 south at Leggett. It is 48 miles to the Surf & Sand Motel, and we’re located at the north end of Fort Bragg around highway mile marker 62.80. You’ll pass MacKerricher State Park in Cleone a couple of miles before you reach Surf & Sand at 1131 North Main Street. If you reach the Pudding Creek Railroad Trestle (now only used for foot traffic), you’ve gone too far.
